Optical Design and Biomedical Applications of Apodized Phase Contrast Microscopy
Tatsuro Otaki

Microscopic observation of unstained living cells is important for biomedical applications. Cells are typically phase objects. Conventional phase-contrast microscopes operate well for observing phase objects, but large phase-object images lose detailed structures because of halo artifacts.

Open-cavity Fabry-Pérot Interferometer Refractive Index Sensor Based on Polished Hollow-core Fiber
Cheng-Z Lin;Chin-Ping Yu

We present a refractive index sensor based on an open-cavity fiber Fabry-Pérot interferometer. The open cavity is fabricated by splicing a polished HCF between two commercial SMFs. A high refractive index sensing sensitivity of 1103.89 nm/RIU and a low temperature sensitivity of 0.25 pm/°C can be obtained.

A Novel Fiber Optic Hot-Wire Anemometer Based on an Sn Metal Airgap Fiber Fabry–Pérot Interferometer
Chung Xian Yang

This study demonstrates a novel fiber optic hot-wire anemometer based on an Sn metal airgap fiber Fabry–Pérot interferometer (AG-FFPI). Cooling effect on the heated Sn metal cavity by air flowing is converted to optical wavelength blue shifted of interference fringes that are experimentally determined and analyzed.

Mid-Infrared Electro-Absorption Optical Modulation on Silicon Using All-Group-IV GeSn Heterostructures
Yun-Da Hsieh;Guo-En Chang

We present an investigation of mid-infrared (MIR) electro-absorption optical modulation using all-group-IV GeSn heterostructures. The direct bandgap energy and direct-gap absorption edge can be controlled by adjusting the Sn composition to achieve MIR electro-absorption optical modulation for MIR silicon photonics applications.

Precise laser pest control for agricultural applications
Sumesh Nair;Chia-Ying Chang;Feng-Chun Hsu;Ching-Chieh Su;Shean-Jen Chen

A laser pest control system was developed which employs 3D small object detection for Caterpillar head recognition using YOLOv2 and image processing. The network was trained with original images and was tested on live samples. On detecting the head, it was targeted with controlled laser pulses and effects were studied.

Design of Solid State Lighting System in the Light-Controlled Drip Detection Device
Chung-Yen Tien

Intravenous drip is a common treatment in hospital. The normal saline, the glucose, antibiotics and even the blood. The device’s point is about soothing stress of taking care patient when the Intravenous drip working.
